| Instructions:
|
| In
order to enter your commuting data properly,
just follow the 5
easy steps below: |
| 1.
First, find the day/days
you want to enter data for the week of
June 3 - 9 / 2007. Keep in mind that you
can enter data for as many days as you
wish during the week. |
| 2.
Estimate the total distance
of your trip in kilometers (click
here for estimate help) and enter
it in the “Round Trip” field. |
| 3.
Indicate which method of transportation
you used by checking off the appropriate
box, for both the first part of your commute
(1st row)
and the return trip (2nd
row). |
| 4.
In the “Commute Destination”
field fill in the major intersections
of your initial destination (work). In
the “Return Trip Destination”
field fill in the major intersections
where your trip ended (home). For example:
Oxford St. at Richmond St. |

| Frequently
Asked Questions: |
I
travel to many places, what travel am
I recording? How
do I estimate my distance travelled?
What do I do if
I use two methods of transportation to
go one-way or one direction of my commute?
What will this data
be used for?
What does it mean
to Tele-work?
Why are there
two rows for each day?
Do I have to visit
the site every day to enter my data? |
| For
consistency, the log/diary is intended
to track ONLY your primary commute. If
you commute to more than one place during
a given week, record the commute involving
the greatest distance travelled. For example:
If you work part-time, a few blocks from
home or school, but commute 5 KM, 4 days
a week to school, track only your trips
to and from school. |
| **
Use the time it takes you to get to work
by any method of travel to help estimate
the distance. ** |
| Bus: |
Buses
travel slightly slower than cars –
a 10 minute bus ride is about 4 KM in
the city. |
| Carpool: |
Keep an eye
on the odometer. Average driving speed
with lights is about 30KM per hour –
a 10 minute drive, excluding parking,
is about 5 KM, less in rush hour. |
| Cycle: |
Strong cyclists
bike approximately 15 KM per hour –
a 10 minute bike is 2.5 KM |
| Walk: |
People walk
approximately 6 KM per hour – a
10 minute walk is 1 KM |
| General: |
The distance
between major intersections outside of
the downtown area is approximately 1.5
KM. Count the major (5-6 lane) intersections
along your commute and multiply by 1.5
to get an estimate. |
| *Note:
Remember to type in the distance of your
commute in KM. |
| That’s
good commuting behaviour. But, it’s
too complicated to track it. Please record
ONLY the method by which you travel farthest.
If you walk 2 KM to a bus, then ride for
5 KM, then walk for 1 KM, record your
trip as a bus trip. |
| The
information gathered through this commuter
log/diary will be forwarded to the National
Commuter Challenge site to be added to
London’s total for the competition,
and will be used to calculate London’s
reduction to environmental impacts. |
| Working
at home while communicating with the workplace
by phone or fax or modem. This avoids
the trip into work altogether. |
| Each
day has two rows because the first row
represents the first part of your commute
and the second row represents the return
part of your trip. |
| The
commute log is set up in a way that you
can either visit the site everyday to
enter one day at a time or you can visit
the site once and enter all your data
into the log together. |
